c. 1870. A homemade forward tilting hat
the base is made out of black silk taffeta covered in lace. Black and white feathers are handsewn onto the right side
of the hat.
This little hat evolved from the little forward tilting Pork Pie
hats of the late 1860's. By the 1870's they were more oval in shape and had more trimming. This one would have been worn very forward on the head and the back would have rested on a full high chignon of the era. Lined
in black cotton. (Formerly from the collection of Leila Hidic)
