Late 1870's Velvet Slippers
These slippers date to the late 1870's when the toe was still square but not as square as earlier shoes had been. They are made out of red silk velvet with gold colored embroidery on the vamps and are completely hand sewn. Made on a right and left last.
They would have been worn as house slippers, lined in white cotton with flat leather soles. They measure 11" long and 3 1/4" wide, would have been worn by a lady with US size 10 feet/ UK size 8.
As they are a bit old fashioned
in style for this period (flat slippers went out of fashion about 1865), they could have been worn by an older woman who would have been used to the styles of her youth. (Formerly of the collection of Leila Hidic)
