Corsets and Crinolines - unique vintage clothing

Chemise

Chemise
This chemise dates to the early 1870's although this style was popular since the late 1850's, it would have been worn under a corset to protect the skin from chafing and to keep the corset clean from sweat and body oils as corsets could not be washed due to rust. It is made out of cotton and has Broderie Anglaise around the scoop neck, short sleeves and a V pointed yoke to accomadate the bust. It is entirely hand stitched. The bust measures at 54" but would have been worn by someone with a bust of up to 44", measures 42" long and comes down to my knees at 5'9". (Formerly from the collection of Leila Hidic)
