Corset Cover

Corset Cover
This corset cover dates from the very late 1860's to the very early 1870's. It has many elements of the 1860's in it, such as piping at the seams, dropped shoulder seams, the style of the princess seaming at the back (there is no middle seam as later bodices will have, only two side curved princess seams). But I think it probably from 1870 as it has a little peplum at the back to go over a bustle. The size of this corset cover is extremely small and there is absolutely no signs of wear, leading me to believe it was made by a young girl to practice sewing or perhaps she decided to start sewing her trousseau mistakenly using her measurements at the time and not sizing up so by the time she got married she was too big for it! It is entirely hand sewn. Shown on my 1950's "Junior Miss" form, it measures : 28" Bust, 19 1/2" waist and its 14" long and is slightly too tight for it. (From the collection of Leila Hidic)
