C.1885-1887. This velvet was originally black but faded to a soft brown colour. A rose pattern is cut into the velvet.
The cut of this bodice is typical for the mid 1880's to about 1890. It has a peplum at the back to go over a bustle and fastens down the front with 17 little brass swirly buttons
. The inside isn't boned, as you would imagine a tight fitting 1880's bodice to be. The bust measures 36" and the waist is 30", which leads me to believe that the original owner probably didn't wear a corset with this or instead just wore a pair of "rational stays".
