C.1880-1883. A rarely found skirt
of the early 1880's in the slim
style. This skirt shows the typical upholstered look of the 1880's with lots of trimming and pleating of the skirt
The skirt is made of a very dark midnight blue silk taffeta and decorated with an attached overskirt. The front of the skirt beneath the overskirt and at the back below the bustle
is pleated to within an inch of it's life. Lace decorated the edge of the overskirt. The overskirt
is cleverly arranged and draped, so it becomes a full bustle at the back
where it cascades down into a sweeping skirt.
The skirt would have been worn about 1" to 2" off the floor. It could be worn with proper
restoration but it is fragile and does have damage to the front of the skirt at the stomach. There is also general wear all over the skirt.
The waist measures approx. 26"-27" and is approx. 41" long.
