C.1880s winter jacket. A black silk velvet jacket
which is cut in Cossack style. Fancy coloured braid Brandenburg fastenings can be seen across the front, looping over buttons to the right hand side. The buttons appear to be 1930's additions.
The jacket is cut with a very nipped in waist
and a very full peplum. It is lined and interlined with brown cotton and stiffening, making it very warm and heavy. The appliquéd motifs
on the peplum and sleeves are embroidered in rich browns, ivories and blues.
The pockets are lined with striped flannel. This is typical of the jackets you see women wearing to skate in in 1880s engravings and illustrations. It has a truly sculptural quality and elegance.
